chimney
屋根の上に突き出た部分だけを指す場合もありますが、通例、暖炉から壁の中を通って屋根に突出する管状の煙の通路全体をいいます。
サンタクロースが煙突を通って室内に入るとされていることからもわかるように、英米の伝統的な煙突は、日本の煙突とは違って、石やレンガ造りの重厚なもので、煙道がかなり広いです。
garden と yard
アメリカでは、花木の有無や舗装・未舗装に関係なく家の周囲の庭は yard、その中の「庭園」「花園」「菜園」を garden といいます。
イギリスでは、yard は舗装された庭を指し、garden は花木が植えられた庭をいいます。
backyard
アメリカではたいてい芝生になっていて、花壇や家庭菜園（kitchen garden）などがあることが多いです。
また、バーベキュー用の炉や道具（barbecue grill など）が置かれていて、客を呼んでバーベキューパーティーをします。
イギリスでは、舗装されていて、塀で囲まれていることが多いです。
shovel, spade, trowel
shovel は、長い柄と幅広の刃が付いたもので、土を掘ったり雪などをすくうときに使います。
shovel に似た道具に spade（すき）がありますが、これは shovel とは違って金属の部分が平らなもので、穴掘り用です。
園芸用の移植ごては trowel といいます。
veranda と balcony
日本語では「ベランダ」と「バルコニー」が混乱して使われていますが、英語の veranda は一階部分の側面から外に張り出した屋根つきの部分を指し、balcony は階上の窓やドアから外に張り出し、手すりで囲んである部分を指します。
なお、アメリカでは veranda の代わりに porch を多く用います。
mailbox
アメリカでは自宅の mailbox に手紙を入れておくと、郵便配達員が持って行ってくれます（ただし最近は、郵便の窃盗などがあるので、郵便局はあまり推奨していません）。
mailbox の中に送る郵便物が入っているときには、mailbox の横に付いている回転式の赤いブリキ製の旗（red flag）を上げておきます。
clothes drying place
「物干し竿」は laundry pole / washing pole / clothes-drying pole、「物干し台」は balcony for drying the washing のようにいうことができますが、
英米には物干し竿も物干し台もありません。洗濯物を干すときは通例ロープを用います。なお、室内の物干し掛けは clothehorse といいます。
